The Great Gatsby *Task - to create and perform a poem in the slam-poem genre where you will become and perform as a character from the novel.

*Audience - Write this for your classmate’s enjoyment

*Purpose - To become a character from Gatsby and tell that character's story through poetry

*BACKGROUND - The book tells the story of Jay & Daisy, the *nouveau riche, versus those old-money snobs, a story of American ambition and identity, during a time when partying was truly our “great American past time.” Some say TGG is the greatest American novel, some say, “Why are we reading this mad old book!” Based on what you guys are saying in our discussions, you seem to get why this novel is so important, now you’ll be able to explore these characters and this time period…

*Specifics:

--- Write your poem from the perspective of a character from the book, Nick, Jay, Daisy, Tom, Jordan, Myrtle, or Tom, in your poem tell the story of that character utilizing all the skills we developed during our Speech unit - HINT: What would Jay be thinking about every night when he goes out to see the green light?

*Process - Continue reading and taking notes, brainstorm, consult study-guides, videos, etc., to get a full picture of the story and character arcs.

WE WILL DISCUSS DURING VIDEO MEETS WHAT SKILLS ARE REQUIRED TO PERFORM THESE POEMS WELL!!!
Begin writing this “free-form” slam-poetry styled poem, (refer to model videos).

*Your poem should be longer than a minute performed, (see the Daisy poem model) but shorter than the Gatsby poem model, so between 1 and 5 minutes in total.
Submit the A.) completed draft on or before the due date, as well as B.) a video of you performing your poem for full credit.

*We will also have a live poetry recital before the end of the term to boost people’s grades and for fun!
