In George Orwell's allegorical novella "Animal Farm", the animals of Manor Farm grow tired of being explored by the man who owns them. They kick him out and take control of the farm with the intention of creating an equal and just society for all animals.

However, when the pigs take the role of leaders - they are the most intelligent animals, after all -, they soon realize their position is advantageous. It does not take long before the pigs begin to exploit the other animals just like their human owner used to.

At a certain point, it is revealed that Napoleon, one of the pigs and the supreme leader, will used a certain field to grow barley in order to produce alcohol. The field had been previously designated for retired animals. This change hurts the animals because it means there is no retirement. Napoleon does not respect their work and sacrifice. Once they grow old and incapable of working, Napoleon will sell them to slaughterers and butchers. That is exactly what happens to the hard-working horse, Boxer, once he can no longer do his job. The new use for the field is nothing but a clear message that the leaders do not care about the working class.
