how to write an essay

Start by determining the main idea or topic of your essay; this will be very important in creating a strong thesis once you start writing. With this also figure out the type of essay you are writing (i.e. argumentative, persuasive, narrative, ect.)Do thorough research on your topic; the more you know the better your essay will be. Brainstorm about it for a while, research it and gain as much knowledge as you can.If you arent good at coming up with ideas on the spot, write up a template. Just jot down a basic outline of sentences and topics you need to discuss then research and develop on each individually. It will make it alot easy if you like to take things step by step. Develop a strong thesis. This short statement may seem unimportant but in actuality it focuses the whole main idea of the essay into merely 1 or 2 sentences. A strong thesis helps you when developing your essay and your reader when figuring out what to take away from the text.Write your first draft! This doesn't need to be perfect, just a rough idea of everything you want to include. I tend to keep my first drafts pretty polished as it helps me when editing later.Edit your essay; this includes many things.. fix any and all grammatical and spelling errors, add transitions to control the pace and tone of your essay, add or delete any information, and so on. During this its also important to cite your sources, if you used any and make sure you do it in the proper MLA format.Read your essay out loud and or have someone else read it. This is just so you can make sure that all the great information you wrote down makes perfect sense when being read.
