Tom said he helped Mayella because he felt sorry for her--meaning that a black man felt sorry for a white woman.

Tom said he often did work for free for Mayella--meaning that he worked without pay. 

Tom said that he had to walk by the Ewells everyday--meaning that it was the only way to get to his job. 

Tom said that he was able to work year-round for Link Deas--meaning that he was always employed.
