Can someone Summarize this for me??? The same is true of other "living fossils." This is partly because things are changing constantly at the cellular level. It is also because Darwin's major discovery, natural selection, is not the only evolutionary force. Math also plays a role. You can keep environmental conditions the same and remove selective pressures. However, mess with the numbers of creatures in a population, and evolution happens.
Natural selection is the best-known evolutionary force. There are many examples of it in recent times. Early in the Industrial Revolution, England's peppered moths were light-colored. This camouflaged them against the white bark of birch trees. Over a half-century, black dust from factories darkened the trees' bark. The moths darkened their coloring too. It happened through natural selection.
This example suggests that a population's biology should remain unchanging as long as everything in the environment remains the same.
