The quote I chose is from The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells. The novel states, “I turned and, running madly, made for the first group of trees, perhaps a hundred yards away; but I ran slantingly and stumbling, for I could not avert my face from these things.” The module theme is theme. I think this quote represents that because this quote is full of meaning and theme. By reading this quote, you can already tell that the story has a theme of curiosity and fearfulness.

This quote also relates to The Cold Equations by Tom Godwin, which is another reading in this module. In The Cold Equations, Marilyn sneaks onto a cargo ship headed for the planet her brother lives on. The ship can’t hold Marilyn, so she would have to be thrown off the ship, where she would die. This relates to the quote because Marilyn’s curiosity put her in a life threatening situation. Because she was so interested in seeing her brother, who she hadn’t seen for a decade, she would have to throw herself off the ship, or everyone else boarding would die. Though the story doesn’t end well for Marilyn, his situation relates well to the quote.

This quote also relates to real life. Have you ever been so curious that you are unable to look away even though it might be harmful? I have. There have been many times in my life where I am so interested in something, but I need to walk away or I will get in trouble. Rubbernecking is a great example of this. Rubbernecking is the act of looking at something out of interest. While driving, if someone ahead of you gets into a car crash, you will probably look at what’s going on out of curiosity. When you text while driving you are unable to look away from your phone. Both of these examples may potentially put you in harm, but your nosiness and curiosity takes over.
