Nelson Mandela was the oldest head of state in Africa since he was seventy-five when he became inaugurated and took office. He was also the first non-white in the history of South Africa as well. He was also the first to take office after apartheid was abolished.

The inauguration of Nelson Mandela took place in Pretoria, in the Union Building. This was May tenth 1994. In show of support over 140 dignitaries form all over the world attended.

In 2013 a bronze statue in his honor was erected outside of the Union Building.
