Thami is a young black man, who is under the rules of apartheid and he understands this. However, Thami wants to be a part of the radical student movement. He believes that meeting violence with violence is the way to solve the social and political issues regarding apartheid. While Mr M believes that a peaceful approach is much more efficient. Mr. M thinks that segregation will cease only through education and knowledge. He thinks if Thami receives a scholarship this would be enough. Unfortunately, they are both aware that being talented and black is not enough in apartheid South Africa. At one point in the story, Mr M sits Thami down  and tells him he thinks it is wrong of Thami to be vandalizing as a protest, he suggests they sit down to discuss racial injustice but Thami disagrees. Thami thinks that what Mr M thinks is violent and vandalism is just simply necessary. Thami knows there is risk in his protesting but he believes it is worth it.

As Mr. M mentions, Thami is involved in a group of protesters who do violent things such as vandalizing and other unlawful activities. Thami doesn’t care about the laws of apartheid South farica because he is opposed to them. As a young black man he feels he deserves to be treated as the white are, along with the rest of his dark-skinned brothers and sisters in South Africa. Now even though Thami and Mr. M have different approaches to the racial injustice movement, Thami respects his teacher. He never was rude or argued back in a disrespectful way when politics arose in a conversation, he was all around a gentleman to Mr. M. When it came to the boycott, police were involved, and Thami was worried for the safety of Mr. M. Thami clearly cared enough about Mr. M to go to school on the day of the boycott, risking his own life. Despite his drastic efforts in begging him to stay inside, Mr. M went outside of the classroom and was killed by the mob of angry people.
