Pathos is an emotional appeal. It targets shared feelings and cultural values with the goal of having the audience relate to what is being said. In other words, the purpose is to inspire an emotion, a feeling in the audience so that they will be open to accept the author or speaker's point of view.

Both excerpts provided appeal to the audience's feelings. Both talk of those who have died: the Address speaks of the soldiers who lost their lives fighting for their country, for the audience even; the poem talks of Lincoln's death, of how he was never able to see the end of the war and the victory so much wished for. Both excerpts inspire sadness and reverence in the audience. They evoke respect for those people's deaths. They somehow tell us to honor their memory by living up to their ideals and purposes.
