Read this excerpt from "Annabel Lee," lines 17-20 and 39-41 and answer the question.
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulcher
In this kingdom by the sea.
Of my darling—my darling—my life and my bride,
In her sepulcher there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.
Sepulcher means both "tomb" and "religious altar for saintly artifacts." Why did Poe most likely use this word in his poem?
The word carries a connotation of death.
The formal language shows the high regard Poe has for the subject of his poem.
The denotative meaning elevates the speaker's personal love to a religious devotion.
Poe needed a word that could alliterate with sea.
