1. Read the poem, Testify, by Rage Against the Machine. Read it again. Read it again.
2. Make jot notes to sketch an essay outline. Be prepared to submit these notes if requested.
3. Write a 600 – 800 word response. Use the poem study guide to assist you.
4. Write an introduction, a body and a concluding paragraph (Leave space to write your intro LAST.)
5. Identify big ideas (themes) and literary devices (including historical and cultural allusions, symbols, metaphors, other sonic devices, etc.), you find relevant to your discussion.
6. Use the line numbers provided to refer to at least 8 poem locations supporting your analysis.
7. Decide what the poet’s intent is and what a reader’s experience might be.
8. Discuss ‘how’ the poem feels, and ‘means’ what it means.
9. Any evidence of use of online resources or help from others will cost 30 to 60 marks.
10. Proof your work; hand it in.
