An American psychologist by the name of Dr. Lawrence Kohlberg performed research by interviewing a group of boys about their moral decision-making to answer the question "How do we tell right from wrong?" From his research, Kohlberg was able to come up with a theory to describe the different ways that human beings make moral choices that also describes how he believed our decision-making changes from childhood to adulthood. His theory Kohlberg identified three levels of moral reasoning: Pre-conventional , Conventional , and Post-conventional. The levels of morals Kohlberg came up with help to explain how people make less selfish choices as they age and how they start caring about the benefit of the community.
