The lines, "She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance.  She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister's arms. When the storm of grief had spent itself she went away to her room alone.  She would have no one follow her" shows a paradox. Mrs. Mallard senses "wild abandonment" it shows as though a gate was opened and she could rush out from confinement into freedom. The words 'Storm of grief', shows her distress over the loss. It is odd that Mrs. Mallard does not react as most wives do in a  "paralyzed" fashion, or seeking the comfort of another's arms. She has unusual feelings about the loss. She looks out of the window.
