Rod in tension (25 pts) In a suspension bridge, cables are hung vertically to support the bridge deck. You are working on such a bridge and have to instrument one cable with 1 strain gage to measure the vibrations in the bridge. By sign convention, you select that the voltage of your 1/4 Wheatstone bridge is positive if the strain is positive (cable is in tension). Assume you have a standard Wheatstone bridge as seen in class.

(a) On which branch of the Wheatstone bridge will you connect the strain gage?

(b) You wish to increase the sensitivity of your measurement, by using a 1/2 Wheatstone bridge. Where will you connect the second strain gage in the Wheatstone bridge and how would you mount it on your cable?

(c) Could you build a full Wheatstone bridge to monitor the cable? Explain why.

(d) Could you still use 4 strain gages to increase your sensitivity? Draw how you would mount them on the cable and connect them on your Wheatstone bridge.

The story line remains the same. the kids live in what was then one of the remaining beachfront slums, down the coast from the expensive malibu area. the beach was ruled by surfers, but in the afternoon, when the waves died down, some of the surfers, or their younger brothers, fooled around on skateboards. one day, skip engblom, the shop owner, comes up with a key breakthrough, polyurethane wheels: "they grip." with the additional traction, the z-boys try skating the sides of the big, open drainage canal that runs through the area. then comes a brainstorm: because of a drought, the area's swimming pools were drained. the kids started "borrowing" pools when the owners weren't home, to skate the curved sides.” where did “the lords of dogtown” originally practice their tricks? a. the beach c. an open drainage canal b. empty pools d. none of these

Read the excerpt from the common sense of bicycling: bicycling for ladies. the bicycle is capable of such high speed that there is a strong temptation to ride so fast as to cause over exertion or excessive perspiration. on the other hand some people ride too slow, causing a zigzag and uncertain movement. while exercising reasonable caution, be a fearless rider. when you come to a steep hill, if the road is clear, let it go as fast as it will. if you rid yourself of that ghost of fear, coasting is one of the greatest delights of cycling. which is the best paraphrase of the text?
