The Hiding Place: Novel Analysis

In this unit, you will be reading Corrie ten Boom’s novel, The Hiding Place. Ten Boom’s story has been an inspiration to many and continues to stand as an amazing example of what faith in God can accomplish.

First, you will need to obtain a copy of The Hiding Place from your local library or book seller. You can purchase it from AOP at https://www. aop. com/curriculum/the-hiding-place if you want but it does not have to be from AOP. Just make sure your copy is not an abridged version.

As you read through the book, take notes on the story. Who are the key characters? What do we know about them? (Are they brave, scared, honorable?) How do you know this based on their actions? What are the key events in the plot? You will not turn your notes in, but they will be invaluable to you as you complete these exercises. Please note that this project is not due until the end of the unit or right before the unit test.

The goal for this project:

Thoughtfully analyze and write about a character and the theme in The Hiding Place

There are four parts to this assignment. You will complete all four parts:

Exercise 4- Writing about a Biblical theme: 6-10 sentences- Must include parenthetical citations and a works cited entry for The Hiding Place. Must address all questions from the directions.

ten Boom.

Now, choose a character from The Hiding Place other than Willem and create your own poem. Remember to follow the format above and choose qualities that are specific to the character you chose.

Exercise 2: Poem Analysis

For this exercise, you will write a 100 to 200-word paragraph that will explain how you know the information you included in the poem. Discuss the parts in the book that say or show the character has this quality. Remember, you must include parenthetical citations when you refer to specific parts of the book. The parenthetical citation should include the author’s last name and page number. This is a chance for you to support your ideas and prove that you have read the book carefully. Be sure to proofread your paragraph to catch spelling and grammatical errors.

Exercise 3: Identify a Biblical Theme

Was the message or lesson you learned about faith or love?

With this in mind, what biblical theme or message was present in The Hiding Place, and what is one Bible verse that relates to it? Please write in complete sentences.

Exercise 4: Writing about the Theme

Now consider how you determined this theme, and answer these questions. What events or situations in the book led you to determine this theme for The Hiding Place? Was this theme or message challenging to you? If so, in what ways? Also, consider what the characters in this story have taught you. What can be learned from Corrie ten Boom’s story?

You should include specific evidence from the book to show how the author developed the theme.
