Henry David Thoreau think it was appropriate to resist the Civil Government in 1849. The reason why is because just three years ago, in 1846, the United States went to war against Mexico in May 1846. That July in 1846, while living at Walden Pond, Thoreau refused to pay his poll tax as a protest against the conflict, for he saw the war as an effort to extend the realm of slavery. Another reason is that it bring awareness to the issues with the government and to show his disgust to the war. It shows his feelings about the war and how he could change it. This war also upset the government a little bit in 1949. So Henry decided to let them cool off and wait for the right time.
