Eat the Spoons and Forks!

Since the invention of plastic back in the early twentieth century, people have depended on plastic products for everyday use. People go to restaurants and cafes and pack leftover food in boxes that are generally accompanied by plastic spoons and forks. Now, imagine a fork or a spoon that you can eat with your meals! This latest trend in the food industry has changed most people's views about using disposable plastic spoons and forks.

Plastic Utensils

Plastic forks, spoons, and knives are very convenient to use on-the-go, but these things have many downsides. These disposable plastic items are single-use only, meaning people use these items once and then toss them in the trash. According to a report by World Economic Forum (WEF), plastic production will triple by the year 2050, and at this rate, the plastic that will end up in the oceans will outnumber the marine life.
Currently, plastic spoons and forks add to the already growing plastic waste problem. People in the United States dispose of around 40 billion plastic utensils each year. Plastic products not only affect the planet's health but people's health as well. According to a study reported in The Journal on Environmental Health Perspective, the chemicals used in plastic utensils and packaging can seep into the food and can cause health issues.
For this and other reasons, people should consider looking into different options rather than using plastic utensils. Metal spoons and forks can be used instead of plastic ones, but they can be a bother as they might be heavy to carry. Also, metal spoons and forks have to be washed after use, which could lead to wastage of water. This is why edible or fit-to-eat spoons and forks are a good replacement option.

Edible Spoons and Forks

Edible spoons and forks are made from materials that are fit to be consumed by humans. For example, a company in India started making edible spoons and forks out of grains like millet, rice, and wheat. The flour of these grains is the main ingredient in making these products. Since these products are made from flour and then baked, they are light and easy to carry around.
Unlike plastic products, edible spoons and forks can either be eaten by humans or animals or can be thrown away in the garbage. When these edible spoons and forks are disposed of, they do not take a lot of time to decompose or decay, unlike plastic. In fact, these spoons wither in a week when disposed of, compared to plastic, which takes hundreds to thousands of years. This does not mean that the spoons and forks a person purchases will melt away in the cupboard. These products can survive for around three years.
Nowadays, companies have started making edible spoons and forks in different flavors to suit people's tastes and preferences.

Main disadvantages

There is not enough research to prove how fit these edible spoons and forks are for consuming. But government and private companies can change this by funding research to support this noble cause. Additionally, edible spoons and forks cannot be reused, so people have to buy them repeatedly. But this is a small price to pay compared to the benefits these products offer.

Efforts to Create a Better World

If even a fraction of the human population changes their habit and informs others about the use of edible spoons and forks instead of plastic ones, the impact on the environment would be enormous. The amount of plastic waste produced will lessen and will help create awareness among people to avoid plastic so that it does not end up in the oceans.
