He tries to make her determination stronger and gives her the courage to live against all odds. Johnsy keeps on counting the falling Ivy leaves since she thought that once the last leaf falls she is going to die, however, the contrary happens, Bhermn who was the painter standing in the rain and painting the leaf for her, had to die.

Sue looked solicitously out of the window. What was there to count? There was only a bare, dreary yard to be seen, and the blank side of the brick house twenty feet away. An old, old ivy vine, gnarled and decayed at the roots, climbed half way up the brick wall. The cold breath of autumn had stricken its leaves from the vine until its skeleton branches clung, almost bare, to the crumbling bricks.

The paragraph helps the reader understand that because the vine is so fragile and weak, it can demonstrate the hopelessness of one being very fragile.
