Identify the three colors associated with the book thief. What clue to the novel’s historical context does the reader first get from “the colors?”

Note: I have already identified the three colors, red, black, and white. I have also re-read this part of the book twice but cannot figure out what historical context these colors give. I know this question may be difficult to answer without being able to look at the exact context of the book but I am here to give any information that is needed.
