In the fourth paragraph, why does the author include the information about how chopsticks have created jobs?
A.
to explain how chopsticks are manufactured in China
B.
to demonstrate how little things have changed in 10 years
C.
to illustrate how tough it is to sterilize reusable chopsticks
D.
to show how hard it is to get rid of disposable chopsticks

Chopsticks were created about 5,000 years ago. The philosopher Confucius encouraged their use because he did not like using knives. To him, knives represented violence. Because of the popularity of chopsticks, people began to cut their food smaller so that it could be picked up by chopsticks. Therefore, the knife was no longer needed. Chopsticks allowed food to be lifted up delicately instead of being pierced. With increased use, these utensils eventually spread to other parts of Asia.
An ideal choice compared to other eating instruments, chopsticks have long been used as utensils in Asian countries. They are the foremost means of eating in China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. Chopsticks are usually made from bamboo, other types of woods, metal, or bone. The design is very simplistic but efficient because chopsticks are just comprised of two long tapered sticks. In contrast, forks are complicated with their pointed prongs.
In China, the disposable wooden chopsticks are overly popular. The country makes about 45 billion pairs of chopsticks each year. The loss of trees is high because of the excessive amount being used for these utensils. Deforestation has become a serious problem in China. This means that 16 to 25 million trees are cut down for chopsticks.
Disposable chopsticks are going to be a difficult habit to completely eliminate. This was made evident 10 years ago when a call was made to stop the use of these wooden chopsticks. Little has changed. In addition, the chopstick industry has created jobs for many people. Restaurants also contribute to the waste because disposable chopsticks are cheaper and more convenient than sterilizing reusable ones.
However, people are leaning toward the movement of carrying personal chopsticks. It is called BYOC, which means "Bring Your Own Chopsticks." The program is catching on and is helping reduce the use of disposable chopsticks. When a person eats out, personal chopsticks can be carried from restaurant to restaurant, which will help cut down on waste. In addition, people can personalize their chopsticks to their preferences. Chopsticks can become the latest accessory.

When i was young enough to still spend a long time buttoning my shoes in the morning, i'd listen toward the hall: daddy upstairs was shaving, in the bathroom, and mother downstairs was frying the bacon. they would begin whispering back and forth to each other up and down the stairwell. my father would whistle his phrase, my mother would try to whistle, then hum hers backi drew my buttonhook in and out and listened to it -know it was "the merry widow." the difference was, their song almost floated with laughter. how different from the record, which growled from the beginning, as if the victrola were only slowly being wound up. they kept it running between them, up and down the stairs where i was now just about ready to run clattering down and show them my shoes. what is the effect of the parallelism used in the above excerpt? it establishes the rhythm of a duet to echo the song. it expresses the same ideas. it mirrors opposite ideas. it is a paradox.
