Scout describes the opening of Tom Robinson's trial as "a gala occasion." Certainly a
trial that may result in a man's losing his life is anything but a "gala." What does Scout
mean? What is she implying? Recall Miss Maudie's comment that to watch a man on trial for his life is "morbid" and that the townspeople are behaving as if it were "a Roman
carnival."
