'Victorian' came in the twentieth century to stand for sexual repression and social convention. Personal life was governed by complex and rigid rules of behaviour. Like other aspects of Victorian culture this began to break down in the fin-de-siécle. Yet recent research, discussed in this lecture, has undermined this rather simplistic picture and begun to explore some of the contradictions and complexities of Victorian attitudes to marriage and sexuality. The place of women in Victorian culture was by no means as passive or subordinate as conventional images of the era suggest.

This course of lectures looks at the Victorians not just in Britain but in Europe and the wider world. 'Victorian' has come to stand for a particular set of values, perceptions and experiences, many of which were shared by people in a variety of different countries, from Russia to America, Spain to Scandinavia and reflected in the literature and culture of the nineteenth century, up to the outbreak of the First World War. The focus of the lectures will be on identifying and analysing six key areas of the Victorian experience, looking at them in international perspective. The lectures will be illustrated and the visual material will form a key element in the presentations. Throughout the series, we will be asking how far, in an age of growing nationalism and class conflict, the experiences of the Victorian era were common to different classes and countries across Europe and how far the political dominance of Britain, the world superpower of the day, was reflected in the spread of British culture and values to other parts of the world.

The Victorian era became really important as a turning point for many traditions, social expectations and gender realities and expectations, as well as cultural aspects, of life. In general, during the rule of Queen Victoria, genders were pretty clear set, and the roles that each gender performed were also pretty clear. A man was the epitome of strength, the provider, and was expected to be so, but also was expected to act socially as a gentleman, and a good person. The woman was expected to be a mother, a wife, a caregiver, and not have much more of a social role because she was supposed to be gentle, weak and always vulnerable. Women were supposed to be under the control and protection of men. In the case of children, although roles were still very much under the male-female expectations that were imposed on adults, sometimes rules were a bit less strict. During this period in time, it was not expected, or permitted, for gender roles, and gender limits, to be erased or overstepped, and there was social, as well as legal, punishment for those who did.

The strictness of gender expectations, and gender rules, and realities, during the Victorian era, and also the advancement of research and knowledge in different fields, as well as the accessibility to learning, reading and writing on the part of women, led to many of the feminist movements later on, and which characterized the 20th and 21st centuries. Without the social strictness of Victorian times, probably a lot of the feminist movement issues would never have happened and much less the destruction of gender roles and gender realities.
