In Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales", the speaker of the story narrates how he had come upon the group of pilgrims in Tabard Inn. these group of twenty nine pilgrims along with the narrator were on their way to Canterbury on a pilgrimage to Thomas Becket's shrine.

In "The General Prologue", the narrator mentions how the host of the Inn became to be a part of the whole storytelling. The place where they were staying for the night was owned by a man named Harry Bailey, who was also the one who suggested the idea of the storytelling. He would also judge the stories and decide which is the best story.
