Learning at the Library
Rebecca Sparling
One morning at breakfast, Nolan's mom told him they would go to the library in the afternoon. Nolan was not very excited about this plan
The weather was perfect and he would much rather grab his baseball glove and play catch at the park
ZYou can learn a lot at the library," his mom said as she moved quickly around the kitchen. She explained that it wouldn't take long and
that she just needed something new to read. Nolan's mom enjoyed reading.
Later that afternoon, Nolan and his mom walked a few blocks from their house to the library. He felt a little sorry for himself as they
walked by a baseball field and saw other children running around the bases. As they continued walking, Nolan felt sure that this trip to the
Library would be a waste of a beautiful, sunny day
* At the library, a woman with red hair welcomed Nolan and his mom. The woman smiled at Nolan and then she helped his mother find a
book. As he waited, Nolan looked at the books on a shelf and saw that all the books were about baseball Nolan had never seen so many
books about his favorite game. There was even a book about his favorite player!
The woman with the red hair returned to his side and said hello. She told him that her name was Samantha, and she asked if she could
help him find anything. Nolan asked Samantha if they had any more books about sports. Samantha showed him where the books about
sports were kept Nolan was amazed to see that there were books about bowling, football, and skateboarding too!
Samantha told Nolan that there were lots of books at the library. If he told her what he liked, she could help him find a book about it
Nolan thought about all the things that interested him. Knowing that he had a long list, he asked Samantha for a pen and a piece of paper.
On the list, he wrote down all the things he wanted to read about
About half an hour later, Nolan met his mom at the checkout desk. His arms were overflowing with books. Samantha had helped Nolan
find books about trains, spiders, and racecar driving. They even found a story about two children searching for lost treasure on an island.
His mom was more than a little surprised that Nolan had found so many books he wanted to read. She just smiled and asked him if he'd
had a nice afternoon. Nolan grinned and told her that he never knew they library could be so much fun
