Take a look at a sample attention getter that would support your thesis statement. There are 5 types of attention getters but we are going to focus on using just 1 type for this writing practice. Let’s figure out how to identify quotes that would be useful ways to approach getting the attention of your audience. If I were writing an essay about dogs being superior to cats, for example, I might look for a quote about a dog being man’s best friend. If I were writing about the intricate workings of the brain, I might look for a quote about how men think. Whatever I choose, I need to find some way to show that it is relevant to the rest of the essay throughout my paper. I will do this through transitions and a lead in to my thesis statement, which we will work on next. For today, find 5 quotes that might go with 5 thesis statements. (You should use the 5 thesis statements that you created two lessons ago, ideally, but if you don’t have those, or you don’t want to use them, find quotes that might go with a paper about how the brain works.)

Read the excerpt from ernest hemingway’s “soldier's home.” his father was in the real estate business and always wanted the car to be at his command when he required it to take clients out into the country to show them a piece of farm property. the car always stood outside the first national bank building where his father had an office on the second floor. now, after the war, it was still the same car. nothing was changed in the town except that the young girls had grown up. how does hemingway’s description of the town as unchanged impact the readers’ perception of krebs? it emphasizes that while the town has remained the same, krebs has changed. it illustrates that krebs despises the town he grew up in because it is boring. it demonstrates that krebs views himself as similar to the other soldiers from his town. it reveals that krebs is jealous of those who were able to stay in town and avoid the war.
