Read the passages from “A Smart Cookie” by Sandra Cisneros and “An Hour with Abuelo” by Judith Ortiz Cofer.

I could’ve been somebody, you know? my mother says and sighs. She has lived in this city her whole life. She can speak two languages. She can sing an opera. She knows how to fix a TV. But she doesn’t know which subway train to take to get downtown.

When I came back to the island, things had changed. You had to have a college degree to teach school. . . . I became a farmer. I married a good woman who gave me many good children. I taught them all how to read and write before they started school.
