A Trip to the Beach: A Journal Entry

Today, I had a wonderful time at the beach with my family and friends. I had never been to the beach before, so I was excited to look around. When we got there, my dad told us that it was low tide. This is when the sea is at its lowest level, and the water does not come up very far on the beach. My dad said that the tide would change, and later it would be high tide. He said low tide was the best time to look for seashells that washed up on the beach.

My friend Heather and I grabbed two buckets and started searching the beach for shells. I found a flat, white shell that looked like it had a flower in the middle. My mom told me that the shell once belonged to an animal called a sand dollar. The animal lived on the ocean floor. As we continued walking along the beach, Heather found some slimy plants that looked like grass. Her dad told us that the plants were seaweed, which are plants that grow in the ocean. He said that seaweed is sometimes used to make certain foods. I did not think I would like to eat seaweed by itself! We also spotted what looked like bugs in the sand. We later learned that they were not bugs at all. They were tiny crabs digging in the sand.

When the water started inching its way back up the beach, Dad said we should take a break and have some lunch. As we ate our lunch on the beach blanket, I noticed some white birds flying above us. Mom said they were seagulls. These birds live near the ocean. She said that we should not feed them any of our lunch because human food would not be good for them.

After lunch, we decided to splash around in the water. As the waves were coming in, Heather spotted what looked like a blob of jelly in the sand. Heather's sister, Helen, said that it was a jellyfish. Helen said we should never touch a jellyfish because it can sting. She said that this helps keep the jellyfish safe from other animals. We left the jellyfish alone and continued swimming in the water. When we were about to go back to the beach blanket, I spotted what looked like a star in the sand. My dad said that it was a sea star, an animal that has five arms. Sea stars have hard bodies, which keep them safe in the ocean. My dad said it was safe to pick it up. So I picked it up and held it for a while. Then, we carefully put the sea star back in the water. I saw so many amazing things at the beach today! I hope we can go back soon.
