the montgolfier brothers' balloon
how to launch a balloon
the early beginnings of hot air
ballooning
building a hot air balloon
in the late eighteenth century, two brothers
from the south of france, jacques and joseph
montgolfier, paper manufacturers, devised a
plan to create a craft that would lift them off the
ground. the brothers got the idea after
noticing that the ashes from burned paper rose
into the air. thinking that heat and smoke from
the flame had lifting qualities, they decided to
put their idea to work. in 1783, the brothers
launched a balloon made from cloth and
paper. burning straw, chopped wool, and dried
horse manure beneath the balloon inflated it.
the burning straw released heat, the
balloon to float smoke, created by the burning
wool and manure, kept the flame low, keeping
the balloon from catching fire. the montgolfier
brothers' balloon, carrying farm animals,
floated for eight minutes and landed safely.
