secondary and primary sources are both great ways of finding out information about a topic that you are studying or might be interested in. both can be extremely and at the same time they can both very hard to understand. keeping this in mind, they are very similar in some ways; with both secondary and primary sources they give you a accurate depiction as to what happened during an event, "place a quote here that backs this up,"

however, they are both different, for instance a primary source comes straight from someone that was dealing with the event as it was happening, "place a quote here that backs this up." this allows you to read how a person felt during that time -while that piece of reading could be very biased it is still a great source if you want to describe how people of that time felt about the situation- it also show you how things were viewed during that time period.

on the other hand a secondary source is written after the event has happened -and is normally written by a professional in a field that deals with the event or time period "place a quote here that backs this up." this would be more if you are trying to state your stand point on a situation -a primary source could also be used for this but secondary source are often un-biased which leads to both sides being explored and more unlikely to be easily written off as a persons "thoughts".

in conclusion both types are when writing a report -say on the civil war- it just takes some careful consideration to pick which one you'd prefer to have; keeping in mind that using both is also a good idea.
