every disaster made my doubts stronger. but rosetta just pulled herself up straight, set her shoulders, and said, “well, i guess there’s nothing for it but to keep going. let’s see what’s over the horizon, because it’ll be better than what’s here.”
today, our milk cow fell in a gully. my doubts finally won out, and i didn’t think we would ever be able to build a good life in this barren, harsh, unforgiving land.
“it’s all my fault, rosie,” i said sadly. “if i hadn’t dreamed those silly dreams, we never would have come to this terrible place.”
