pausing to connect ideas in a text

the lesson: good readers aren’t born that way - good readers are created through reading practice. yes - the more you read, the better you read! good readers also learn to use certain reading strategies. good readers often pause their reading in order to connect ideas in a text, trying to understand not only what the author is saying, but how and why they are saying it. competent readers reader top to bottom left to right, but also bottom to top and right to left. they stop mid-sentence to re-read important ideas. they connect visuals to text, look up difficult words, and then find connections among words and different ideas.

the process: when you read, it is important to read actively. this means that you are taking the time to really think about what you are reading. how does it make you feel? what do other ideas pop into your head that is related to what you are reading? have you learned about the idea/topic before? do you detect any bias or opinions? what is the author’s purpose for writing this? who is their intended audience and how does that fit with what they have written? what do i understand so far? what don’t i understand? what information does the author need to clarify? why has the author repeated this word? how does this term or phrase connect to what the author is arguing? how does what i just read connect to the above paragraph or section? what is the author trying to get me to think about here, and here?

the tool: readers pause to connect ideas within different types of texts for different reasons. the following section includes charts readers can use to pause to connect ideas within textbooks, nonfiction, and fiction.

how are the titles and subtitles related to the surrounding text?

how are the visual aids (pictures, graphs, maps, etc.) connected to the words on the page?
