amelia earhart, an american original
(1) amelia earhart knew the risks she was taking in planning to circumnavigate
the globe in a plane, but she undertook them anyway. in a letter to her husband in
case this flight would be her last, she wrote, “ know that i am quite aware of

he hazards. women must try to do things as men have tried. when they fail, their
failure must be a challenge for others.”
(2) approaching her fortieth birthday, earhart made plans to become the first
woman to fly around the world. on may 1, 1937
, she and her navigator, fred
noonan, took off from florida to begin their 29,000

mile trip. four weeks and
22,000 miles later, they arrived in new guinea. their next stop was tiny howland
island in the pacific, about 2500 miles away. she and noonan nev
er reached
howland, and a search and rescue operation was launched soon after they did not
arrive there as scheduled. her plane has never been found, and the ultimate fate of
earhart and noonan is unknown to this day.

during world war 1 she worked as a nurse’s aide in a military hospital in canada.
after attending college, she was a social worker in boston. her life changed forever
when took her first airplane ride in
1920. soon afterwards she took flying lessons,
and six months later, she had saved enough money to buy her first airplane.
(4) in 1928 amelia became the first woman to fly across the atlantic with two
other male pilots. when they returned to the
united states, a parade was held in
their honor in new york city, and they were invited to the white house to meet
president coolidge. three years later she married george putnam, a man whom she
had met during her preparation for her transatlantic flight.
earhart became the first
woman to fly solo across the atlantic ocean in 1932. for this feat president hoover
presented her with a gold medal from the national geographic society and
congress awarded her the distinguished flying cross. she became the fi
rst woman
to win the latter award.
