fun facts about llamas
by shanti flaherty

llamas are fascinating animals, native to south america. llamas are relatives of the camel, though they do not have humps like camels do. the native peoples of the andes mountains, in peru, have domesticated and used llamas as pack animals for centuries. llamas can carry 50-75 pound loads, up to twenty miles in a day. however, according to a recent article from national geographic, if llamas are saddled with more than 75 pounds of weight, they ". . will simply refuse to move (and will) often lie down on the ground and may spit, hiss, or even kick at their owners until their burden is lessened."
llamas were first brought to the united states in the late 1800s, and put on display at american zoos across the country. according to zoologists at the pittsburgh zoo, llamas do not always get along. in fact, if one llama does not like another llama, it will stick out its tongue to express its distaste for the other llama. additionally, it will spit at the other llama, until it goes away.
the gestation period for a llama is approximately 350 days. baby llamas are called crias. typically, a llama will have only one baby in its lifetime, and twin llama births are extraordinarily rare.
llama dung can be used as both fuel and fertilizer. modern scientists speculate that the ancient incans were able to grow corn in the cold, high mountaintops of the andes, using the dung from llamas.
llamas contribute in many ways to their human communities. their fur is used to make wool that is turned into rugs, rope, and fabric. additionally, their hides can be made into leather.
