The poem "as i grew older" is concerned with growing up. how do the images in line 5 and 7 express the change from early years to later years?

In line 5, Langston Hughes expresses his optimistic mind as a little boy hoping to achieve his dreams as he would get older. However in line 7, Hughes expresses how he strayed further away from his dreams as a barrier challenged him and his hope to achieve the dream diminished.
