When you write in response to a descriptive prompt, remember that you are not being asked to write a narrative with a plot and characters.
your response should describe a physical thing, like a house, a cup, or a face. if you are describing an experience, describe it as one unified thing or a moment in time. for example:
• if you describe a helicopter ride, you might describe the sights, sounds, and emotions of the ride, or you might describe the helicopter, but don’t include the sequence of events that occurred during the ride.
• if you describe a person, describe physical details of his or her appearance—not his or her personality or life history.
write a descriptive poem at least six lines long about an experience or emotion. you may use any poetic structure you want, such as free verse; verse with rhyme and meter; or verse with meter and no rhyme. focus on sensory details. make sure the poem refers to at least three senses. your goal is to make the reader see, hear, touch, taste, or smell the thing you are describing.
