All of these answers can apply except "to publish academic research" and "to use a formal, rigid writing format." Blogs have many uses, and I'm sure we all have read or even written blog posts that are funny or simply record a chapter of someone's life, whether they are connecting with others, sharing their opinions, or reflecting upon something that happened in their lives or in the world. Blogs have a very relaxed format, meaning you don't need to write in a certain way, like you do for school papers.
