have you ever wondered what you have to do to become a field hockey goalie, or wondered what they have to wear, and what they have to learn and how to defend the goal? well, i will answer that for you, and give you some tips. being a goalie is very stressful because as the ball advances down the field you have to be ready to defend the goal. also, it is stressful when the other team scores on you because i think it was my fault that we lost but then i remember that the ball had to go through eleven people to get to me.
to become a field hockey goalie you need to be concentrated and aware of what is happening on the field. you need to watch the ball at all times. you need to be aware of your surroundings and where you are in the field. also, you got to be a leader you need to talk to your teammates at all times. you need to have a lot of confidence, strength, you need this because if the ball is accelerating towards you what you need to do is kick it to the sides as far as you can or smack the ball with your stick.
if you would like to become a field hockey goalie here are some tips for you! first things first you want to keep your weight forward at all times you should try to always stay on the balls of your feet. this you keep the ball flat when kicking and making foot saves but is also key when diving or smothering to ensure you don’t rotate back. your head is very heavy so is key in keeping your weight forward. the second tip i have for you is to keep your hands in a high and open position when facing shots but you also want to make sure you are comfortable and able to move quickly and react to high shots if you keep your hands low and by your side you will struggle to get them up to save high hard shots. the third tip is from my coach herself to be relaxed and always watch the ball this might sound obvious but when you have someone nailing the ball at you from the flick spot your natural reaction can be to tense up and make yourself smaller. if you stay nice and big and watch the ball you will be amazed and how many you naturally react to and save i didn't think this tip would work but when i tried it i was amazed how well it worked. the last tip i have for you is to have fun and be happy! no one likes getting in a goal is like a nightmare for me, you have to accept that you won’t save everything. don’t get down by goals that go in, or hung up on a shot you should have saved. clear your mind and focus on the next one, you never know how the game will pan out and you might have the chance to be the hero and save a stroke at the last minute. if you're still beating yourself up over an earlier goal you won’t be in the right frame of mind to make that save.
being a goalie you need to protect yourself from that ball you could break a lot of bones if you didn't have them you should practice with your pads on because you never know what will happen. what you need to become a goalie includes the following helmets are required for all goalies and should have a cage or mask that fully covers the face. mouthguards and throat are very much required. also, goalies should wear padded goalie pants, pelvic protectors, leg guards that fully cover the lower legs and allow freedom of movement, and the correct size kickers and cleats. goalies should wear chest pads, arm guards, and elbow protectors, which usually are connected. they should be the correct sizes to prevent them from slipping or not offering enough protection. right- and left-hand protectors should be the correct size and offer plenty of padding to stop hard shots.
safe training and practicing are also very important because you can injure yourself in many ways including tripping on the ball, falling, and getting hit with a stick. when you are going to practice or play a game you should always stretch well and at least run two laps around the field and shuffle around. also stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids before, during, and after games and practices.
in conclusion being a goalie might seem like we are just standing there not doing anything and might not seem hard but to be honest it is very hard because of all the training and focusing and being ready to defend the goal. also, it is a lot of pressure because you don't want to hear the awful sound of that ball hit the hard black wood of the goal. also, it's fun at the same time because making mistakes is how you learn to get better. a lot of people don't play this position because they are scared but you should try it out and see how you like it in the goal, and i guess if you don't try it i don't know why you read this because i thought you what you needed to do and know about being a goalie. anyways if you end up trying it i hope u like it!
