you don't need to live on a farm to grow your own food. in fact, many people grow their own produce on apartment balconies or in small backyards. you can create a container garden right where you are living today. if you are just starting out as an urban gardener, tomato plants may be the best choice for you. the best time to plant tomatoes is in the late spring and early summer because they need warm soil in order to thrive.

first, you'll need to decide where to start your container garden. the best location will provide at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight for your plants. also, be sure to check with apartment management before growing plants on a rental property.

the next step is to purchase supplies. you will need containers, rocks, soil mix, and, of course, tomato plants. plastic containers at least 12 inches high and 12 inches deep work best because they the plants stay hydrated, and five gallon buckets with holes drilled in the bottoms are a good choice for this project. be sure to put something under the containers to catch the excess water that drains out of the holes. next, place the containers in your urban garden and add rocks to the bottom of each to the soil drain properly. fill the containers three-fourths full of soil mix, and plant one tomato plant per container. be sure to water the plants well so their roots will settle into the soil.

your new tomato plants will need plenty of water, and it is a good idea to check on them every day. if you notice anything unusual about your plants, such as bugs, lack of growth, or diseased leaves, you can find more information about tomatoes at the local library or online. hopefully, your new urban garden will thrive for many years, and you can sit back and enjoy the delicious fruits of your labor.

Read the excerpt from chapter 18 in frankenstein. alas! to me the idea of an immediate union with my elizabeth was one of horror and dismay. i was bound by a solemn promise which i had not yet fulfilled and dared not break, or if i did, what manifold miseries might not impend over me and my devoted family! could i enter into a festival with this deadly weight yet hanging round my neck and bowing me to the ground? i must perform my engagement and let the monster depart with his mate before i allowed myself to enjoy the delight of a union from which i expected peace. examine this excerpt to analyze the way the author’s choice of words adds to the meaning and impacts the tone of this portion of frankenstein. what does victor mean when he talks about “this deadly weight yet hanging round my neck and bowing me to the ground”? how do these words affect the tone at this point in the story? use examples and evidence from the text to support your analysis. frankenstein chapter 18
