locks of love is a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces for children and young people who have lost their hair because of illnesses. people under the age of 21 who cannot afford to buy an expensive hairpiece are eligible to receive one from locks of love. the organization accepts donated hair in order to make the pieces.
the locks of love hairpieces are of very high quality. the retail value of the hairpieces ranges from $3,500-$6,000. about six ponytails go into each hairpiece. each strand of hair is injected into the base of the hairpiece by hand. the base of the hairpiece is a silicone cap that is molded to form a vacuum seal on the child’s head. the hairpiece will not come off until the wearer removes it. the child can even wear the hairpiece while swimming and showering.
