How does lincoln address audiences expectations in the first paragraph

In the beginning of the speech, he establishes his ethos in one long verbose sentence that is strung together in lines 5-10 to allow him the luxury of controlling the reactions of his  audience. The purpose also being to tie all his ideas into the big picture of finishing the war.

i go to the store and buy some cheese,suddenly there was akward silence.   out of no where comes a ninja, and he takes an apple, and chokes the cashier, until he passes out.   the disapeared in a puff of smoke.   the cashier went to the doctor, and everything was fine again.   they all lived happily ever after without anymore ninjas.
