curl up in a blanket, grab your tissues, and get comfortable, because i promise, you will not want to put this book down. a tree grows in brooklyn by betty smith has earned a perfect 5 stars from me. i was genuinely surprised when i did some research and found that it has won zero awards. i thought it was so good that it should have won a newberry medal! this is one of those books that when you read it at a young age, it’s a good book, but when you read again when you are older, you understand it better. it is extremely detailed and well written, and smith did a superb job creating the characters. i would recommend this book anyone 10 years old and up, only for a few content themes that might not sit well with younger kids.
set in the early 20th century, a tree grows in brooklyn is a book about growing up. the nolan family has always been poor, running on just enough money to pay rent, buy food and save a little bit. katie rommely-nolan is a housekeeper for their apartment building and two others, while her husband, johnny, takes odd jobs as a singing waiter, and tries extremely hard to stay sober for his jobs’ sake, as well as his children’s. francie and neely, ages 11 and 10, respectfully, do what they can to , and try to make a bit of money every weekend at the junk buyer’s to pay for food, as well as be able to buy themselves a treat without spending their parent’s precious pennies. they learn from a young age that hard work pays off, but even so, you don’t always get what you want. their struggles through their childhood made them strong-willed and hardworking adults. if there was one life lesson that i had to pick out of the many in this book, i would say that the best is to persevere, and don’t give up.
my copy of a tree grows in brooklyn was a gift to me from my aunt, and i could never her enough. i have read this book multiple times, and each time, i understand it more deeply. i have never found anything that i haven’t liked about this book. i was deeply moved by the hardship the nolan family faced and the fact that they certainly come out much stronger than they started. my only advice is not to read this if you are under age ten. there are a few themes that might not sit well with that age group. i always want a copy of this in my collection. reading this book is a life-altering experience that i will never forget.
reading a tree grows in brooklyn is a beautiful experience for anyone, young or old. it is rich in lessons, without it being overly moralistic. it a classic that i have read many times, and i will probably read it my whole life without ever getting tired of it. this book is a gift that i will never forget, and i hope that everyone who reads this agrees.
