1.millions of tons of trash floats in our oceans. 2. there is all kinds of items, including fishing nets and bottles. 3. currents in the oceans carries this debris so that it collects in big areas known as garbage patches. 4. these areas of garbage has been increasing in size since plastic first became commonly used sixty years ago. 5. anything made of plastic is very durable and buoyant, so it will float in the ocean for many years. 6. why is garbage patches such a problem? 7. for one reason, birds, as well as fish, mistakes the plastic for food and die after trying to eat it. 8. in addition, if people eat these fish, then they are risking their health. 9. until everyone stops creating so much trash, there are not a solution to this problem.
