1929 – writes a farewell to arms bringing much critical acclaim. 1931 – hemingway's last child, gregory, is born. 1932 – publishes death in the afternoon, a non-fiction story about spanish bullfighting. in addition to writing about bullfighting, he includes information on spanish culture, food, history & politics. after writing this book, he becomes known as “papa”. 1933 – writes winner take nothing, collection of 14 short stories. he travels to africa (mombasa, nairobi, kenya & in the serengeti) to hunt big game for three months. this experience provides him with information to write another non-fiction book, green hills of africa and a short story, the snows of kilimanjaro. 1935 – green hills of africa, his 2nd non-fiction book is published. 1936 – two short stories, "the snows of kilimanjaro" and "the short happy life of francis macomber" are published. 1937 – hemingway travels to spain as a reporter for the north american newspaper alliance, to cover the spanish civil war. publishes his 4th novel, to have and have not. 1938 – writes his only play, the fifth column and a collection of short stories, the first forty-nine stories. 1940 – divorces pauline, marries martha gellhorn, a writer he met in spain. they move to havana, cuba. hemingway publishes fifth novel, for whom the bell tolls. this novel was written in cuba and key west. the setting for the novel is the spanish civil war, based on factual events of american robert jordan. 1941-1944 – wwii – hemingway is involved in undercover operations with the navy off the coast of cuba and as a war correspondent in europe. hemingway's experience in africa inspires him to write the short story a. green hills of africa b. the snows of kilimanjaro c. the short happy life of francis macomber d. death in the afternoon
