Describe poe’s requirements for the short story genre.

According to Poe, the following are some requirements for the short story genre:

1. The short story should be able to be read in one sitting (not more than one to two hours).

2. The first line must have an effect about what the story is about.

3. The story must strive for unity of effect.  Poe believed that the aim of the short story was to create a mood or an an ambiance.

4. It should also aim for truth. Poe believed that the story should remain true to the way people really act in a given situation.
