Which sentence supports the prediction that the world's food supply will be affected if an effective mitocide is not developed?

it is seldom noticed in a garden, and if it is, people run for cover. few poems are written about it and its hairy figure and bulbous eyes will probably not be painted in watercolors on a greeting card. yet, without this insect, life on the entire planet could be threatened. that is what scientists are saying about the disappearing honeybee.

the honeybee makes honey, of course. worker bees are active foragers gathering nectar and pollen from flowers to produce the honey the hive needs for survival. in the course of their work, honeybees track pollen from flower to flower, which in turn, pollinates the flower. pollinated flowers of fruit and vegetable plants produce fruits and vegetables. flowers of such plants which do not get pollinated do not grow any produce. the american honeybee seems to be disappearing at alarming rates and is now endangered. this is a big problem for farmers. without bees to pollinate their plants, farmers have no crops. without crops, people have no food.

honeybee populations around the globe are dwindling due to natural habitat destruction and pesticides. but a natural threat to the bees are the tracheal mite and the varroa mite, two culprits that invaded the united states in the mid-1980s and have now spread to most states. these mites are developing resistance to the one insecticide that beekeepers have been able to use against it. the honey bee decline is such a problem that states are renting their honey bee colonies to farmers in affected states, like the apple growers in michigan.

researchers are working to develop a new mitocide that will effectively eliminate the menacing mites. another solution that is equally as frightening as the poison-resistant mites is to develop a new strain of bee that can resist the mites. this is the stuff that horror movies are made of. people, however, around the globe are becoming aware of the threat and are taking positive steps to save the bees. some are taking up beekeeping, others are raising awareness and raising money, like mikaila ulmer. mikaila began a project to save the bees when she was only four years old. the project has since turned into a money-making family business.
