gandhi developed a code of action over years, call civil disobedience. he called it nonviolent noncooperation, and it proved to be one of the keys to india's independence from great britain. whenever there was trouble with british soldiers, ganhdi urged the people of india not to fight, telling them instead to simply stand still.
almost twemty years later, martin luther king jr. would take up the same position. he called it nonviolent resistance, but the results were the same. these two men of peace achieved more than anyone would have thought without ever once resorting to violence.
