It was close and dry and dusty in the house of the gods. i have said the magic was gone but that is not true—it had gone from the magic things but it had not gone from the place. i felt the spirits about me, weighing upon me. nor had i ever slept in a dead place before—and yet, tonight, i must sleep there. when i thought of it, my tongue felt dry in my throat, in spite of my wish for knowledge. almost i would have gone down again and faced the dogs, but i did not.

i had not gone through all the rooms when the darkness fell. when it fell, i went back to the big room looking over the city and made fire. there was a place to make fire and a box with wood in it, though i do not think they cooked there. i wrapped myself in a floor-covering and slept in front of the fire—i was very tired.

In John's world, cities are called Dead Places and metal is believed to be cursed.

In the excerpt we are analyzing, John has reached an enormous dead place, New York. Even though he is afraid of the gods' ancient magic and of the spirits he has been taught to believe inhabit this place, his thirst for knowledge is stronger. He chooses to spend the night at the Dead Place. His dreams during that night bring the revelation that there were no gods, no magic. It was society's fascination for technology that brought its own destruction.

everyday, people all over the world are making sacrifices; all for different reasons. some people may choose to do more simple sacrifices, like, "my daughter is receiving an award at school, but i also have an appointment, so i will decide to cancel that appointment to be there with my daughter" although she is cancelling her appointment, she can easily reschedule it, and spend her time with nore important thungs in life: being there with her daughter. this will make her daughter happy too because she is recieveing an award for her hard work, and it brings us happiness when our hard work is noticed and appreciated.

on the other hand, some people dont know when to make a sacrifice, ir bow to make one. well, making a sacrifice is when you do something for someone else other than yourself, for someone else's happiness, not so you can gain something in return. you do it for them, not for you. so, anyone can make a sacrifice, even the most simplest ones, like giving up the tv for a sibling or a sibling with homework, when you could be doing something else. the point is to others, when you can be doing something else. you do it out of the fact that you want to them, not so that it can benefit you.

making sacrifices benefit people in many ways, it can bring a smile to there face knowing someone is willing to and bring kindess. alot of people tend to feel unwanted and that no one is there for them, but if we show kindess and sacrifice the less importnat things in life for the most important things in life, people will once again feel happiness and more at ease knowing that someone is or was there for them, even if it be only once.

there on the beach was a struggling turtle.   around its bright green neck was a loop of soda can rings.   in order to the planet, i have made a few changes to my life.   the first change is reducing the number of straws used. the second change was to recycle.   finally, i have worked hard to clean up litter.   it is important to clean our ocean.

you may not think straws have a large impact but they do.   imagine for every straw you sip out of a poor, , adorable turtle is being harmed.   one way i chipped in to is by using metal straws.   these straws are reusable and inexpensive.   another change is simply turning down straws.   by refusing a straw, i’m the turtles one drink at a time.  

however, the ocean just doesn't have turtles.   there are lots of creatures that live there and are harmed by all the litter.   to prevent litter from growing it’s important to recycle.   for me, i have started to buy most goods that are made out of recycled material.   pura vidas, chacos, purses, and too many other items to even count.   plus, when you buy those products they give money to charities.   not only am i the environment, but i’m also feeling better about my self.   finally, i have worked hard to clean up litter.   it is important to clean our ocean.
