One possible source for Hamlet is a 13th-century legend called Amleth, chronicled by the Danish historian Saxo Grammaticus. Although it is unlikely that Shakespeare would have known the original story of Amleth, it is quite possible that he discovered it in an adaptation by François de Belleforest. Hamlet is one of two Shakespeare plays to be translated into Klingon ( the other is Much Ado About Nothing). Shakespeare may have been inspired to write Hamlet after the death of his only son in 1596. His son’s name was Hamnet and he was 11 years old at the time of his death. In the 13th century there was a play written called "Amleth", sources say that Amleth was the play that Shakespeare based Hamlet on.Some believe the 1596 death from an unknown illness of Shakespeare's 11-year-old son—the intriguingly named Hamnet—prompted the dark tone in the playwright's later works. Other scholars think that the death of Shakespeare's father in 1601—the same year he wrote Hamlet—inspired his exploration of a grieving son.Literary Influences.
