He and his wife used the ark to escape the flood sent by Zeus. this is the same to Noah and the arc because God told Noah that He would make a covenant with him.  A covenant is an agreement with a promise.  He would save Noah, his wife, and his three sons and their wives.  They would be safe in the ark because God was going to flood the whole earth and everything else would die.
