The crowd is silent after the speech because it is thinking about what Allison said. Her speech was powerful and must have had an impact. It seems they all agreed with what she said because after the silence everyone stood and cheered. Andy believes that meant that they "had people behind [them]." The title of the source text also tells us that Allison Gibbons did something that made a difference.
